Anastasia Oja

Supporting Role

Personality Type: INFJ

Age: mid 20’s

Position: Jonas’ partner. Works as nurse in AIDS ward of Franklin City hospital.

Ethnicity: Estonian

Background: Her parents fled Soviet Occupation in 1968 after seeing a documentary about America on Finnish television.  She was three years old.

Growing up in a primarily eastern European working class neighborhood, Ana was always very conscious about the ongoings of the cold war.  Her parents would often tell her of life there, and she developed a strong sense of justice, not only for her own people and others struggling under communist regimes, but for other groups to she became to see as mistreated or maligned in some way.  She was too young to be involved in the American Civil rights movement but it captivated her, and so from the age of 12 she became involved in other social movements: women’s liberation; the rights of Mexican farm workers; ongoing struggles for racial justice, etc.  But of all these things what drew her most was the gay rights movement.  Although not homosexual herself, she found it unconscionable that someone would be discriminated against for loving another human being.

After finishing HS she attended a college and nursing school at a prestigious university.  Once she finished, the AIDS epidemic was in full tilt.  As it affected many of her friends and a community she had come to adore, she took the first job she could find working at an HIV/AIDS wing of a hospital.  As no one else wanted the appointment, she found herself managing the nurses on that ward from a very young age.
